Liverpool FC: Amongst English Club Football's Elite

One of America’s premier broadcast interviewers in modern times, Larry King said in an interview with Bill Maher on Real Time: “If you’ve been around this long in the business of television, there must be something that you’re doing right.”
Ironically, the same is true of Liverpool, one of English club football’s most successful team.
It’s a known fact that the way English view football is much more than a sport. And Liverpool is no stranger to bouts of hooliganism and riots that are largely unwanted outbursts from the fans over the disappointment of their team’s loss. The events that unfolded at the Heysel Stadium at the Champions League Final between Liverpool and Juventus and just four years later, at Sheffield Wednesday’s own stadium Hillsborough are ugly reminders of Liverpool’s tainted reputation with ‘the beautiful game’ at its worst. It’s no coincidence that sports betting and a capacity for alcohol amongst its fans has played a strong part in these events as well.
But this is just one part of Liverpool’s story – the reason why they’re considered a part of the English football elite is because of their rich history of winning more titles that anyone other club in English club football.
The titles include eighteen league titles, seven FA Cups, seven League Cups, and five European Cup titles, a record that remains unsurpassed by any other English club to date.
Yet a club with such a colorful history to say the least was founded in the aftermath between John Houlding and the Everton Football club in 1892. This rivalry remains even until this day, very similar to the arch-rivalry of Barcelona F.C and Real Madrid in La Liga.
Much like the El Clasico between the Catalun giants of football, Everton and Liverpool holding true to tradition also host the Merseyside derby every year in the league with the ‘Reds’ and the ‘Blues’ fans sitting together while cheering for their respective teams. Therefore, it is also called the Friendly Derby because families from this area (that live around Everton and Liverpool clubs) don’t necessarily cheer for the same team, yet sit together as they are from the same family, of course). Another interesting aspect of this game, is that more players have been sent off from this game than in any other game in the English Premier League.
Thanks to the Liverpudlian Merseybeat group, Gerry & The Pacemakers hit “You’ll never walk alone”, it is the anthem of the Liverpool F.C which is sung by its supporters moments before the start of each home game.
The Liverpool supporters call themselves ‘Kopites’, and is known to have the fifth-highest average League attendance for an English club where almost every home game played is sold out.
In being the most successful team in the Premier League’s history, it’s no surprise that Liverpool have cemented their place in British culture especially whenever football is involved in the scheme of things.
With a new stadium being built just 300 yards away from the one they have been using at Anfield, and another successful season in the wings, there is no doubt that Liverpool is here to stay as one of English club football’s elite.
So here's a video of the new stadium that will be ready by the year 2011: {youtube}ZzH-J5aRi_g{/youtube}
And one can only surmise that since been around for this long, they surely must be doing things right! |
